Historically most users of Microsoft Project have the software installed on their work computer, as do their work colleagues. With this setup its difficult to share and manage common company resources and report progress across multiple projects. You could embed projects and share resources with a common resource pool, but eventually this option will become slow and cumbersome.

Now Microsoft have developed Project Online Professional with Office 365 and SharePoint. Project managers can now save and edit their online schedules using their computer or portable device. Resources can be shared across projects and reports can be created to monitor progress at whatever level the organisation requires. Project tasks can be sent to the project team, and the project team can update the project manager with completed work. Reports can be linked to Business Intelligence and a graphical output of current progress can be displayed to the team.

Project online limitations

 

To keep Project online performing at its best, there are some limits to how much data you can realistically store:

  • 30,000 projects per Project Web App site
  • Initial quota of 25GB per Project Web App site

Project online offers many configuration and customization settings, but customizations can have a performance impact. There can be a performance impact and trade offs of some of the most common Project Online settings, so you can make informed decisions when it comes to customizing and configuring Project Online.
